  2. AFE - Archive Front End, a Cheap(!) native OS/2 2.1 VX-REXX program
  3. which provides a visual front end for the handling of ZIP, LZH, ZOO
  4. and ARJ files.

  11. Installation

  13.     Upgraders from AFE 2.0 or 2.01 should proceed as with a new 
  14.     installation since AFE.CFG's layout has changed and VROBJ.DLL must 
  15.     be upgraded to the 11/19/93 version.  It should not be necessary to
  16.     pre-erase the old files.

  18.        1. UnZIP AFE22.ZIP.  If you're reading this, you've probably
  19.           already done that.
  20.  
  21.        2. Type AFE-INST from the directory where all the unzipped files are
  22.           located.  This program will guide you through setting the
  23.           variables for your system, where to install AFE, where to install
  24.           the .DLL file and create a desktop object for AFE that has the
  25.           proper settings and associations.

  27. * Note: OS/2 puts a "." as the first path in your LIBPATH statement in    *
  28. * your CONFIG.SYS file by default.  This tells OS/2 to search the current *
  29. * path for the appropriate .DLL when you try to execute a program.  The   *
  30. * AFE-INST program requires this to work unless you are running it        *
  31. * directly from a directory in your LIBPATH.                              *

  33.       The entry fields in the installation program support all the
  34.       normal editing functions supported in the WPS such as destructive
  35.       backspace, overwriting highlighted text, etc.  When you are
  36.       satisfied with your entry, press the "Okay" button (or Enter),
  37.       and you will be stepped to the next variable defining dialog.

  39.       If the meanings of the directory variables are not clear to you
  40.       with the explanations in the install program, read the section on
  41.       running AFE to understand how the the directories are used.

  43.    3. If everything goes properly, AFE should start when you exit the
  44.       installation program.

  46.    4. (Optional) Set the font in "E" to SYSTEM VIO.  This makes
  47.       viewing plain text files easier because of its even spacing.

  49. I have the program object along the bottom of my Desktop since I use it
  50. everyday.  I use a Shareware File/directory manager that supports drag
  51. 'n drop from its file list which makes it super easy to start AFE by 
  52. highlighting the file name and dragging it to my program icon.  Plus, if
  53. I want to run AFE from the main menu, I don't have to dig into a folder
  54. to start it.

  57. AFE is a copyrighted program.  It is not public domain or free
  58. software.  A limited license is granted for the purpose of determining
  59. suitability of the program.  Registration is required for any use
  60. beyond a 15 day evaluation period.  Registered user have the right to
  61. use this program for their personal use on one or more computers
  62. provided that only 1 copy is in use at the same time.

  64. After a couple of weeks of using AFE, you ought to know if it's the
  65. archive tool for you.  Fill out and print REG-FORM.AFE and make out a
  66. check.
